This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week. You’ll join our Building Control team and work alongside knowledgeable colleagues who are passionate about delivering excellent service to our community.
Job Description
About the gig
As a Senior Building Control Officer, you’ll be one of our technical experts, helping ensure building projects are safe, compliant and completed to a high standard. From reviewing building consent applications and conducting inspections, through to issuing certificates and providing advice, no two days are quite the same.
You’ll work closely with homeowners, developers, builders, architects and other industry professionals, providing clear and practical guidance that helps people navigate the building process with confidence. Customer experience is a big part of the role, so you’ll enjoy building positive relationships and finding solutions that work for everyone involved.
This role also gives you the opportunity to take the lead on complex technical matters, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, support Council’s accreditation requirements, and share your knowledge with others across the team.
You’ll be trusted to make sound decisions, manage competing priorities, and help ensure Council meets its responsibilities under the Building Act and associated legislation. Most importantly, the work you do will directly contribute to creating safe and sustainable communities throughout the district.

Desired Skills and Experience
A bit about you
You don’t need to tick every box, but you’ll likely bring a strong combination of technical expertise, sound judgement and great people skills.
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
A relevant technical qualification in line with Building Control Authority requirements.
Experience working with the Building Act 2004, NZ Building Code and related regulations.
Current technical competency in Residential 1-3 and Commercial 1-3 categories.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly and confidently.
Experience building positive relationships with customers, contractors and stakeholders.
The ability to stay calm under pressure, manage deadlines and make well-reasoned decisions.
Leadership capability and a willingness to support continuous improvement across the team.
A full New Zealand driver licence.

The pay for this role is between $93,243 and $109,697 a year, depending on your skills and experience. We’ll make sure it’s a fair reflection of what you bring to the role.
